Casa Terra Nova – Holidays in the Algarve, on Portugal's sun coast
Casa Terra Nova is located in the “Quinta das Raposeiras” urbanisation, between the villages of Sta. Barbara de Nexe and Bordeira. “Quinta das Raposeiras” translates as “foxes' lair”, and surely there would have been many foxes living here at the time of construction, around 1970. Today this south facing slope is home to about 80 generously spaced houses. Many plots are very large which affords privacy, but are not isolated. The Quinta has its own Café, 2 restaurants and 3 tennis courts that are only 10 minutes' walk from the house.
Sta. Barbara de Nexe is about 4 kms away. In this small village in the evergreen hinterland of the Algarve, 11 kms north-west of Faro, you will find a bank and post office, supermarket, butcher, as well as cafés and restaurants, providing all necessities. The nearest small village, Bordeira, with cafés and restaurants, is 2 km away.
Ruins, charming markets and glorious sandy islands
In the market towns of Loulé (9 kms) and S. Bras de Alportel (7 kms) there are daily vegetable and fish markets. The small village of Estoi, 5 kms east of Sta. Barbara, is known for its Roman ruin Milreu with its coloured mosaics and its large monthly farmers/gypsy market. The harbour town of Olhão offers probably the best market halls with daily fresh vegetables, meat and fish. Every Saturday the local farmers sell their produce around the market halls. Take a seat in one of the many cafés and watch the colourful scene.
From Olhão or Faro you can take a ferry to the beautiful sandy islands of Armona, Culatra, Farol and Deserta, still a well-kept secret. Faro, the regional capital, has a quaint old town, as well as a pedestrian area with lots of shops, street cafés and restaurants.
Golfers´paradise – Quinta do Lago and Vale do Lobo
Golfers are well served in the golf paradise of Quinta do Lago and Vale de Lobo (20 mins drive), and some of the most beautiful beaches of the Algarve are also in this area.
City breaks – Seville and Lisbon
The culture cities of Seville and Lisbon are a 2 and respectively 3 hours' drive away. The Express Train “Alfapendicular” can take you comfortably from Faro to Lisbon in 3 hours. There is so much else to write about, but you may want to go on your own journey of discovery - we would be pleased to assist you.
